Canvas stretching

Bring your own canvas, we will stretch it.

You do not have to print with us to use our workshop. If you have a painting, a canvas you bought rolled, or a print from someone else, measure the painted area and we will stretch it over solid wood bars and get it ready to hang.

The options

Two depths, plus float framing.

Standard 1"

Our default. Solid wood bars an inch deep, cross-braced once the piece gets large enough to need it. Suits most paintings and prints, and sits close to the wall.

Deep 1.5"

Chunkier bars that give the piece more physical presence and a deeper shadow line. Worth it on larger work, and the usual choice if the piece is going to hang on its own.

Add a float frame

We stretch onto 1" bars, then set the piece inside a wooden frame with a shadow gap around the edge. Eight finishes to choose from.

What stretching costs

Measure the painted or printed area, choose your depth, and the price updates as you go. It includes wire and hooks, and tells you how much canvas you need in total.

Finishing

No stretching Rolled, ready for your own framer. Standard 1" Solid wood bars, wrap of your choice. Deep 1.5" Deeper bars, more substantial profile. Float frame Stretched on 1" bars, then mounted in a wooden frame.

How should the edges look?

Gallery wrap Your image continues around the sides. Best when there is some space around the subject, since a little of the image wraps onto the edges. Mirror wrap The sides are a mirrored reflection of your image's edges, so the full image stays on the front and the edges blend in naturally. Colour wrap The sides are a solid colour, white as standard. Clean and simple, and keeps your whole image on the front.

Measuring

How to measure, and how much spare you need

Measure the painted or printed area only. That is what ends up facing the room, and it is what we price on. Ignore any blank canvas around it for now.

You do need that blank canvas though. It wraps around the bars and is stapled at the back, so there has to be a margin on every side beyond your image.

Standard 1" bars: 7.6cm spare across the width and the height
Deep 1.5" bars: 10cm spare across the width and the height

If your canvas is painted right up to the edge with nothing spare, tell us before you bring it in. We can still stretch it, but some of the image will wrap onto the sides, and you may prefer a float frame so nothing is lost from the front.

Measure the solid area. The dashed outer edge is the spare canvas that wraps around the bars and disappears at the back.

Before we start

What we check

Three things decide whether a canvas will stretch well. Send us a photo on WhatsApp with the measurements and we will tell you straight away.

Square, with margin to spare

The canvas needs to be square, and to have enough spare material on all four sides to pull around the bars and staple at the back.

Paint or ink fully cured

Fresh oil paint can crack once the canvas is pulled tight. If it has been painted recently, it may need longer before we touch it.

Not stretched before

Old staple holes and creases limit how much we can pull. We can usually still work with it, but it is worth knowing up front.

Ready in three working days

Adding a float frame does not normally change that, though an unusual size can add a day while we cut the moulding.
